Safety

Safety is part of the product.

Ballastra gives communities and their members practical tools to manage interaction and moderation. These tools help, but no platform can prevent every kind of abuse, so reporting and community moderation matter.

Account safety

  • Secure sign-in and session management.
  • Password and security controls in Settings.
  • Active sessions you can review and sign out.
  • Two-factor authentication for accounts that enable it.

Community moderation

  • Roles and permissions that decide what each member can do.
  • Mute, kick and ban for handling disruptive behavior.
  • Activity history so owners can see what happened.
  • Community rules set by Nexus owners, on top of Ballastra policies.

Your controls

  • Block people you do not want to interact with.
  • Privacy settings for who can reach you.
  • Control over your profile and what you share.
  • Request data export or account deletion.

Data and encryption

  • Traffic between your device and Ballastra is encrypted in transit using HTTPS/TLS.
  • Passwords are handled by our authentication provider and stored hashed, never in plain text.
  • Ballastra offers optional end-to-end encryption for 1:1 direct-message text. Either participant can turn it on for a conversation; message bodies are then encrypted on the sender’s device, and Ballastra relays and stores only ciphertext it cannot read. Group chats, Space messages, media uploads and voice or video calls are not end-to-end encrypted. Ballastra systems can read that content, which is what makes moderation, reporting and search possible there. Encrypted DM text is not included in search.
  • Treat Ballastra as you would any hosted community platform: do not send secrets you would not want stored on a server.

Reporting

  • Report harassment, fraud, spam, scams, impersonation and dangerous content.
  • Reports are reviewed by Ballastra moderation.
  • Report from inside Ballastra, where the context is available.

Communities you can shape

Nexus owners and moderators run their communities: they assign roles, grant permissions, manage members and review activity. Members are expected to follow both Ballastra's policies and the rules of the communities they join. When something goes wrong, report it so it can be reviewed.

Policies

  • Child Safety — our standards, prohibited content and how to report child sexual abuse material.
  • Community Guidelines — what is and is not allowed on Ballastra, and how rules are enforced.
  • Terms and Privacy — the agreements that cover your account and your data.
  • Security — the guarantees behind sign-in, sessions, media and encryption.
