In practice
Catching up after a day away
Open the panel and the important things are on top: the mention in #general, the reply in #feedback, the release announcement. Mark them read and you are caught up.
Mentions, replies and reactions
Notifications collect the moments that actually need your attention: being named directly, getting a reply, seeing the reaction to something you posted, knowing a voice room session started with people you care about. They arrive grouped and easy to scan, so a busy day in several Nexuses does not become an unread-count arms race.
Being mentioned in a role or everyone mention is covered too — with the permissions to send those held by the right roles, so "everyone" stays a deliberate broadcast rather than a default.
Push across devices
Notifications reach you whether or not the tab is open. Push notifications fire across the devices you use, so a mention in a Nexus finds you on your phone even when you stepped away from the browser.
For communities built around projects, this is the difference between keeping up and constantly being behind. The right notification at the right moment lets a distributed group move together without anyone chained to an open chat window.
Mute and control the noise
The flip side of notifications is you being able to turn them down. Muting works per Space, per group chat and per conversation, so a lively community does not drown out the one you actually care about.
Grouping keeps the notification list readable, and clearing is one action instead of a session of housekeeping. Notifications exist to serve you, not to hold you hostage — that is the design intent, and the controls are the proof.
