Identity

Be yourself everywhere.

One profile carries across every Nexus: avatar, banner, status, badges and presence. Your role changes from community to community — you don't.

In practice

One person, three communities

Noor maintains a project in one Nexus, moderates a hiking group in another and is a regular in a music community. The same profile shows up in all three, with a different role in each.

One identity across every Nexus

Your identity on Ballastra is one profile that carries across every Nexus you join. The same username, avatar, banner and status are recognisable whether you are in a makers’ Nexus, a study group or the community you run yourself — there is no separate nickname per community to keep track of.

That is a real quality-of-life difference from apps where every group has its own separate identity. People recognise you, your history is coherent, and switching between communities does not mean re-introducing yourself each time.

Your profile, your way

Profiles are customisable without becoming a design project: username, display name, avatar, banner, pronouns, a status message and an accent colour. Enough to be recognisable and express a little personality, simple enough that everyone in the community actually has one.

Customisation is per-profile, not per-community, so the identity you build is yours across Ballastra. The status message can carry an expiry, and presence — including an appear-offline mode — is under your control rather than broadcast by default.

Why identity matters to a community

Communities run on trust, and trust runs on recognition. When the same people show up across the Nexuses you share, with the same name and history, the community starts to feel like a group of people rather than a stream of anonymous messages.

For builders this is especially useful: the person who answered a hard question in one Nexus is recognisably the same person when they surface in another. Recognition is how expertise travels in a community network, and identity is what carries it.
