In practice

Growing a public community

A photography collective makes its Nexus public so new people can find it under Film & Photo, while a private Nexus for the core editors stays invite-only.

  • Public Nexus listed in Discover
  • Private Nexus by invite only
  • Same people, both communities

Find communities worth joining

Discover is Ballastra’s directory of public Nexuses — communities whose owners have opted in to being searchable. It exists so people can find communities by interest instead of needing an invite from someone already inside, and it is the on-platform answer to "where do people like me hang out?".

Only communities that choose to be public appear. A private Nexus stays invisible and invite-only, so the directory is genuinely curated by owners’ intention rather than being a firehose of everything that exists.

Search and browse by interest

Discover lets you browse public Nexuses by what they are about, so a new account is not a blank start. Whether you are looking for a dev community, a niche hobby or the people behind a product you follow, the directory is the front door.

Joining is low-friction: find a public Nexus that fits and join. The Nexus’s own structure — its categories, roles and moderation — is already in place, so a new member lands in an organised community rather than a raw channel dump. The control page covers how those roles and moderation rules are defined.

Invite links work for every Nexus, public or private. A private community brings people in exactly this way — the owner controls the links, and the community stays invisible to search while members join through the link.

This gives owners both modes without a trade-off: public Nexuses gain discoverability, private Nexuses gain tight control, and a community can move between the two as it matures. The mechanics are the same either way — share a link, people arrive in the right place.
